This may be a gaming first. A video game based on a film is actually being remade. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall. Amongst the countless games to spawn from a movie premise, Riddick was one of the few to translate from the big screen to the gaming market without absolutely sucking. Tigon, Sierra, and Starbreeze are all back to remake the gaming anomaly they created just three years ago.
Though Assault on Dark Athena is a remake, plans are to add lots of additional content to the single-player experience, especially that which was cut from the original game. Multiplayer is yet to be confirmed. Graphics had to cheat their way onto the original Xbox through normal mapping, and the PS2 couldn’t bench-press that kind of detail if it tried. Now with the technology of next gen consoles, the textures are being completely redone to take advantage of the new hardware. Vin Diesel is also reprising his role as everyone’s favorite Furian anti-hero, Richard B. Riddick. Low-pitched dialogue will no doubt ensue.

It’s virtually hit every platform to date, so it was only a matter of time before Namco’s compilation phenomenas made their way to the Wii. Now before you start to bemoan about this being more of the same, things are going to be different — sorta.
What?!? I am serious.
Today the company announced Namco Museum Remix will consist of five classic titles (Pac ‘n Roll, Galaga, Pac-Motos, Rally-X, and Gator Panic) retooled with Wii’s unique capabilities in minds. In other words, be prepared to twist, shake and wave your arms… a lot! Namco provided a short background of each remixed title as follows:
Pac’n Roll Remix – Pac-Man will ROLL his way to victory instead of chomping his way through. Players navigate Pac-Man by rolling him through worlds where he will face deadly obstacles, roll-up classic pac pellets and use awesome power-ups.
Galaga Remix – With Galaga invaders arriving from the far reaches of space, players must try to shoot down the invading forces and save Pac-Man from ultimate destruction. With up to four-players able to challenge the oncoming invaders, and scores being tallied for each player, wiping out an alien species has never been so much fun.
Pac-Motos Remix – The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to knocking your opponents off a series of unique and colorful stages all while using the Wii Controller to move, dash and power-up your Pac-Man! Players engage in a small arena where the goal is to knock opponents off while grabbing power-ups and navigating through challenging environments.
Rally-X Remix – With up to 4 players capable of taking the screen at once, this classic Namco title is brought new life with slick graphics, power-ups and a new intuitive control scheme using the Wii Remote to steer. All these new features for Rally-X equal one thing – fun.
Gator Panic Remix – Gators pose a serious problem and Pac-Man is here to solve it. Players use Pac-Man to whack at emerging gators that appear on screen. The player with the most gator whacks at the end of a match wins!
Namco Museum Remix will revitalize popular Namco games, recreating them from the ground up with intuitive controls utilizing the Wii Controller and with new visuals in terms of both graphics and presentation. Each game delivers a unique experience that can be shared between anyone wanting to jump in on the action.
Nine faithful (read: original) classic titles will also be included on the disc. I hope you’ve got a thing for Pac-Man, because he makes up a third of the list. The list consists of: Galaxian, Dig Dug, Mappy, Xevious, Gaplus, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Mania and Cutie Q.

At the risk of sounding like we're just repeating press release news, Bomberman is FINALLY coming to Xbox Live. Yeah, I said finally. In my opinion, this is the type of game that was born to be on Xbox Live and I know there's plenty of you out there who would agree. Details are sparse at the moment but the most important highlights have been revealed: 8-person online multiplayer, full character customization (over 10,000 possible combinations — wow!) and yummy HD goodness. Expect a broad range of classic and original levels. Hm, I wonder which previous Bomberman installments will be getting the HD treatment?
He's in your console… Blowing stuff up. |
"This has been one of our most requested games, our fans have been clamoring for it, and we are thrilled to finally be able to deliver the game they want," said John Greiner, President of Hudson Entertainment. "As our flagship series, Bomberman has been hailed as the best multiplayer game ever created. Now that Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade delivers a truly worldwide multiplayer gaming platform, we can at last bring to market a Bomberman game that represents our long-term vision of the brand." Damn right we've been clamoring for it. I am downloading this on day one!

In between all the kicking and screaming (not that we can blame you, our guys are eager to play Halo 3 too), the waiting is finally over. Microsoft has been hard at work to rectify this afternoon’s unexpected delay and have released a patch which was just launched approximately one hour ago (7:00 PDT). So you know what that means right? Yes… you can play unlock the beta via Crackdown in the Downloads section.
Microsoft also offered the following statement which hopefully will soften the woes for all of you who gave up time off work/school for this highly anticipated moment:
“We sincerely apologize for the delay. We know we have a lot of fans that have been waiting for the beta for months, and even took time off of work to start early today. We really appreciate their enthusiasm, and we hope the small delay wont dampen everyone’s enjoyment of the game. Given the circumstances, we will be extending the duration of the Halo 3 multiplayer beta from June 6 to June 10, 11:59 PM PDT.”
Now isn’t that sweet? Makes me wanna go out and grab a copy right now just to join in the fun. (No, I am serious).
