Question What are your aims in a shmup game?!

I was playing Gradius V a few days ago and I just saw some new pics of Sengoku blade collection on the ps2. I was wondering how other people go through a shmup.

For the score? Or just beat the boss and say NEXT?!

I always start to just try to beat the game and later on i'll pick it up as I am sort of a score junkie. Only thing might I see as an obstacle is, I am focusing more on RPGs lately (or time consuming games you could say) and end up giving up somewhere down the road on the score with shmups. I need to stop buying less RPGs for sure. But I would say I always do it for the score, as I have always try to put some magical scores on all the shmup I have played so far after defeating the game.

shmup? is that like a Shoot Em Up? I dunno what that stands for...

anyway, I play those top down games just to try and beat it since I suck at them, trying to dodge all of those little dots and shit! Never changes! Still hard as hell though...

I remember a few years back, I saw this thread on another forum talking about this game where you have to shoot pieces of clothing off of women, and in the boss battles you have to blast off thier undergarments or something, freaky stuff... I forget what the name of it was though...

Beat the boss on the highest difficulty setting. I don't give a damn about the score.

Avoid playing it.

Screw the score. Well...these days I don't care about scores unlike the 8/16-bit era. These days, all I want is to master the game.

Neither. I play shmups for the sheer adrenaline they give you. The tension a shmup gives you is like nothing else. Beating say a DoDonPachi boss without dying is an amazing feeling; to dodge that many bullets for that long. Awesome. I love shmups

They're fantastic games.

To begin with, its to beat the game, as I'm quite shit, but after a few runs its all about the score.

I agree with just about everyone here. I'm in it to play the game rather than engage in a technical exercise, so my primary aim is to get through the level. It's why I prefer Radiant Silvergun to Ikaruga.

Ha!! I know what you mean. Funny you mentioned Dodonpachi as I seem to get that adrenaline pump only when playing Cave games. I am not sure why..I mean sure, first time playing all shmup I get that feeling, but after I beat it and I am trying to put a magical score in the game I don't really get that feeling anymore. Unlike with Cave games...no matter when or how many times I play the game I still feel like I am playing it for the first time and often mess around, but that is part of it. I heart Cave!!

Much less focus on score and beating the game, all I do these days in shmups is dodge. Dodge dodge doge, pretty much as often as I can. It's like training and its mad fun.

Dodging is fun, but I still end up dying. Where's that famous "code"? I need 30 lives.

Playing a shooter for the score is about as important to me as playing a fighting game for the score.

Not very.

Depends on the game, but almost all of them, I try to make it as far as I can on one life. I love watching all those crazy vids of people going through entire games on 1 life, gives you something to really strive for.

Then there's games like Blazing Star, where I just go for as high a score as possible.

Then there's games like Ikaruga where I occasionally see how long I can go before I get tired of playing a shitty shmup and snap the disc in half.
